There are over 80 different types of massage around the globe. Some of them are most common types offered at several salon and massage centers. Each massage comes with own style and technique and offers its unique benefits. Typically all the massages involve pressing and rubbing of various body muscles and tissues depending on client’s needs. Let’s see some of the major types you can get to avail at any normal salon.

1. Neuromuscular Massage

Neuromuscular therapy or massage is a soft tissue manipulation that deals with the causes of chronic pain associated with muscles and nervous system. This massage is typically medical oriented and reports the trigger points or tender muscle points, circulation, nerve compression, postural and biomechanical issues that are usually caused by repeatedly movement injuries.

2. Chair Massage

As indicated by the name, a chair massage is associated with a person sitting fully-clothed in a chair. These massage can be easily seen in public such as at airports, county fair, music festivals, etc. Generally a chair massage accounts a duration of 15-20 minutes with rubbing and pressing of shoulders, neck, arms, hands and back muscles.

3. Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu is a Japanese term, with literal meaning of “finger pressure”. In this massage, the therapist uses a rhythmic and varied pressure on certain exact points on the body. The points also known as acupressure points, are areas from which vital energy (chi) flows through the body. Some experts say a proper Shiatsu massage can relive blockages at these acupressure points.

4. Thai Massage

In a Thai massage, the therapist asks the client to move into a variety of positions. This massage focuses on muscle compressions, mobilization of joints and some acupressure techniques.

5. Reflexology

In reflexology, the therapist uses several techniques of hand, fingers and thumb to stimulate some parts of hands, feet and ears. Therapists believe that these areas and reflex points correspond to different organs and systems of the body. The sole purpose of reflexology is to improve general health of a person and induce a sense of well-being.

6. Pregnancy Massage

In pregnancy, a women’s body undergoes some major and critical changes. As the name suggests, this massage is specifically practiced to reduce stress levels, decrease in feet and hand swelling, and relieving joint and muscle pain of a women in labor. It is especially useful when some medications are restricted or limited due to some medical reasons.
